Majestic centennial trees

Our island is home to some of the world’s most remarkable centennial trees. These venerable giants have stood for centuries, silent witnesses to the rise and fall of civilizations and empires. They have weathered countless seasons and serve as living monuments to our cultural and historical legacy.

From towering oaks to enduring cypress trees and from sacred olive trees to striking plane trees, these remarkable trees whisper tales of the island’s rich heritage. In Kathikas village, legend has it that Agios Nikolaos (St. Nicholas) was once passing through the area and, exhausted from his journey, sought a tree to rest beneath. Finding none, he sat down to repose and, before departing, dug a hole with his stick. He prayed to God for a tree to offer shade to future travelers. Today, a magnificent 700-year-old cypress tree stands where Agios Nikolaos once sat, a living testament to his wish.

Local tradition in Kalopanagiotis village recounts a miraculous tale involving a Kermes oak tree (Quercus coccifera) and the Ottoman invasion of Cyprus in 1571. As the invaders advanced on the village, its inhabitants, primarily women and children, sought refuge in the Church of Panagia. A colossal Kermes oak tree stood guard outside. When the Ottomans approached the church, the tree miraculously lowered its branches, forming an impenetrable barrier. This divine intervention saved the villagers, and the church was subsequently named Theoskepasti, meaning “God-protected.”

Olive trees, these evergreen wonders, have thrived in Cyprus for millennia. Their gnarled trunks are testaments to resilience, each one seemingly holding centuries of stories within its rings.

In Kyperounta village, legend has it that an 800-year-old olive tree sprouted from a pit discarded by the Apostles Paul and Barnabas on their journey to Pafos through the Troodos mountains. Other ancient olive trees, also estimated to be around 800 years old, can be found in Xyliatos and Agglisides, each a living relic of Cyprus’ rich history.

The majestic plane trees, offering shade & serenity for centuries, are abundant in Cyprus. Discover ancient giants like the legendary Plane Tree of Agia Mavri. A timeless legend tells of Saint Mavri, a young woman from Koilani village, whose love for Timotheus was forbidden by her parents. To escape an arranged marriage, the couple fled on the eve of the wedding, seeking refuge in a nearby cave. It is said that Saint Mavri miraculously parted a rock, creating a passage to Pera Pedi village, where they escaped. The holy water that flows there today is said to emerge from this opening. It is believed that a massive plane tree, now known as the Plane Tree of Agia Mavri, grew at the same spot, and it stands as a majestic 800-year-old witness to this ancient tale.

The Department of Forests has recognized the importance of preserving these natural treasures and has classified many as “Monuments of Nature.” Efforts are underway to protect and conserve these centennial trees for future generations to admire and cherish.
